Who's Ileana?...About the artist

Cuban born artist Ileana comes from a family of fine artists and architects. She completed a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of South Florida in Tampa, and an M.A. in Education from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She has taught art at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, and in several private programs.

Ileana has exhibited her work, winning numerous awards, in Florida and Mexico. Her artwork is in private collections throughout the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. She has done numerous commissions, the largest being a six by twelve foot mural for Yung Ho Tae Kwon Do School in Brandon, FL.

Having been involved in training and showing dogs since 1972, Ileana is very familiar with all breeds of dogs. She has participated with her dogs in conformation, herding, tracking, and competed at the national level in obedience and agility. The sport of dog agility requires the utmost in endurance and fitness for both dogs and handlers. In order to compete successfully, Ileana has trained in the physical and mental discipline of the Martial Arts, and attained a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Her familiarity with performance events has given Ileana the experience necessary to depict animals in action. Her years of observing the dog show world has led her to create witty works of art, and to write stories about dogs and dog shows to warm the hearts of dog lovers everywhere.

The artist and her Boxer Emmy       After traveling the US, Canada, and Mexico, Ileana and her menagerie settled in Valrico, Florida where she set up her country studio. She is a past training director and agility chairman of the Dog Training Club of Tampa. She now teaches private and group dog obedience and agility classes in Valrico, Florida. The name of her school is...The Cool Critters! She is a former 4H instructor with the Hillsborough County Dog project.  In 1988 she was featured in the dog training segments of The Gentle Doctor, a series about veterinarians which aired in  public TV networks throughout the country.  Ileana and her Boxer Emmy (the #1 Agility Boxer in the country for 1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001) appeared in several episodes of Animal Planet's Zig & Zag Alpha Dog Challenge. Ileana's wildlife art and limited edition prints were sold at The Busch Gardens Wildlife Art Gallery, in Busch Gardens, Tampa, FL.

Besides her fine art studio and dog training school, Ileana was involved in the production of a series of children's books on animal extinction titled Animal Ark, and has illustrated several children's books.
